Coaching and mentoring

Increasingly companies and organisations are incorporating in-house mentoring schemes into their staff development and personnel practice. For some this may be part of a wider drive to improve performance and effectiveness; for others it may be a component of a training and induction programme for new employees; or a way of providing support and development for under-represented/minority groups within the workforce.

JLJ Associates offer three one-day courses in coaching and mentoring to assist in the development of effective mentoring in the work place. We are also able to ‘build’ a custom course incorporating relevant elements form each of the three courses to meet customers’ specific needs.

The effective mentor…

This one day course provides an overview of the principles of coaching and mentoring and allows participants to begin to develop the skills associated with being a successful mentor or coach.

The course includes:

  • What is mentoring/coaching
  • Defining the aims and objectives of the relationship – what is your role
  • The boundaries of the role
  • Coaching colleagues – fundamentals of peer mentoring
  • Key skills required of a successful mentor or coach
  • Do’s and don’ts for mentors
  • Dealing with difficult situations
  • Measuring success
  • Drawing the relationship to a close when the task is complete

The line manager as mentor…

This workshop is aimed at line managers/supervisors and explores how in incorporate the principles of mentoring and coaching into standard supervision processes

The course includes:

  • What are the basic principles of mentoring/coaching
  • Basic good practice in the supervision process
  • Incorporating mentoring into line management – the line manager as coach
  • Modelling – the relationship between leadership and mentoring
  • How to use mentoring to improve performance/tackle under achievement
  • Mentoring to provide support and the development of skills
  • Do’s and don’ts for the line manager as mentor
  • Measuring success
  • Sustaining growth and motivation

Setting up a mentoring scheme…

This course is aimed at managers who will be responsible for establishing in-house mentoring/coaching schemes. It looks at all of the issues that need to be considered and provides advice on best practice through the use of case studies and lessons from other organisations.

The course includes:

  • What are the basic principles of mentoring/coaching
  • What role does mentoring/coaching play in staff development
  • Determining the boundaries of the role
  • Selecting appropriately skilled mentors
  • Training mentors for their role
  • Matching mentors and mentees
  • The issue of remuneration
  • The issue of confidentiality
  • Debriefing - providing support and supervision to mentors
  • Anticipating difficulties and devising solutions
  • Measuring and demonstrating success

A comprehensive workbook of courses handouts and further tips and suggested reading is provided for all participants to take away for future reference. In addition, JLJ Associates will provide complimentary telephone/e-mail support to all participants for a period of one month after attending any of the above courses.
